First School of Veterinary Medicine in Puerto Rico

The School of Veterinary Medicine of Universidad Ana G. Méndez seeks to contribute to the excellence in veterinary practice in Puerto Rico and the rest of the world by developing competent professionals who have the necessary skills to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients. 

About the Doctoral Degree

The Board of Post-Secondary Institutions of Puerto Rico, approved the amendment to the License Renewal of Universidad Ana G. Méndez - Gurabo Campus to offer the first Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). The new academic offer will develop professionals to acquire the skills needed for the practice of Veterinary Medicine. The duration of the program is as follows: 6 semesters (3 years) in Puerto Rico and 2 semesters (1 year) in accredited institutions affiliated to UAGM. Once the accrediting agency, the American Veterinary Medical Association- Council on Education, authorize the DVM program, the UAGM will admit the first class. 

Requirements for Admission

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field from accredited institutions, with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Two semesters of Biology (6 credits), one semester of Genetics (3 credits), General Chemistry and laboratory (4 credits), Organic Chemistry and laboratory (4 credits), one semester of Biochemistry (3 credits), one semester of Physics (3 credits), one semester of any of the followings: Pre-calculus, Calculus, Statistics (3 credits), two semesters of English (6 credits), one semester of Humanities or Social Sciences (3 credits).
  • CASper Test.
  • Submit evidence of competency in the English language if English is not your first language (TOEFL or IELTS).
  • 150 hours of professional veterinary experience (may be as an intern or in research).
  • 3 letters of recommendation. (One letter should be written and signed by a veterinary doctor and the others may be from professors or researchers.).
  • Official Transcripts.
